A 50-year-old man in Hyderabad’s Malkajgiri district killed his young daughter before ending his life on Thursday, September 18, due to financial stress.

The man, identified as Ashok, lived in Bahadurpalli with his wife Soni and their 5-year-old daughter Divya. The family had been struggling for years after Soni lost her leg in a road accident and Ashok failed to find steady work.

Police said Ashok had earlier tried to kill himself and his family by causing a gas leak on September 16, but neighbours rushed in after hearing Soni’s screams and turned off the supply.

The next day, Ashok left home with Divya. Both were later found dead in a lake behind Saint Peter’s College in Maisammaguda. Based on Soni’s complaint, police have registered a case and started an investigation.

This is not the first such tragedy linked to debt in Telangana. In July, a government school teacher in Medak district died by suicide after failing to repay Rs 7 crore borrowed for a failed real estate venture. He had collected money through a chit fund but could not return it to investors, leading to mounting pressure and legal action.
