Two policemen in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai district have been arrested and suspended for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh.

The woman and her mother had come to the district to sell fruits. While waiting by the roadside late at night, they were stopped by the policemen on patrol. The officers, identified as constables D. Sureshraj and P. Sundar, allegedly took the women to a secluded spot, where the daughter was assaulted.

Police confirmed the arrests and said both have been suspended. Authorities also stated that steps are being taken to dismiss them from service permanently. An investigation is ongoing.

The case has sparked anger across the state. AIADMK leader and opposition chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami called it a “dark blot” on Tamil Nadu’s law and order situation.

He said the government should be ashamed, adding that women now feel unsafe even with the police, who are meant to protect them.
