India defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets in their Asia Cup 2025 Group A clash on Sunday, almost sealing their spot in the Super Fours. But instead of celebrating a big win, the match has been overshadowed by controversy and political tension.
Playing Pakistan was already a sensitive issue, with many calling for a boycott. The Indian team took the field only after government clearance, and emotions around the game were running high. Former cricketer Suresh Raina claimed the players themselves were not comfortable facing Pakistan in the tournament.
“I know one thing for sure. If you ask the players personally, none of them wanted to play the Asia Cup. They were forced because the BCCI agreed to it. I feel sad India is playing Pakistan. If Suryakumar Yadav and his team were asked their personal views, they would have said no,” Raina told Sports Tak.
The controversy deepened after the post-match handshake tradition was skipped by the Indian players. This small gesture, seen for decades as a mark of respect in cricket, was absent. The Pakistan Cricket Board lodged an official complaint, while former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar publicly expressed anger at the snub.
Adding to the tension, Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha did not attend the post-match presentation ceremony, further highlighting the strain between the two sides.
What should have been remembered as another thrilling India-Pakistan clash is now being talked about for political undertones, broken traditions, and heated reactions rather than India’s strong performance on the field.
