A landslide in Upper Rimbi, West Sikkim, claimed three lives and left two others, including a seven-year-old boy, seriously injured late Thursday night. The incident took place in the Yangthang constituency of Geyzing district.
According to Geyzing superintendent of police Tshering Sherpa, the victims were trapped when the landslide hit their home. Rescue teams rushed to the spot despite tough weather and terrain conditions, with local residents stepping in to help.
The injured were taken to the district hospital. Sadly, one woman died during treatment, while another remains in critical condition. The young boy is also receiving medical care.
The deceased have been identified as 53-year-old Bhim Prasad Limbu, 46-year-old Anita Limbu, and 50-year-old Bimal Rai — all from the same family.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He said the government’s priority is to ensure safety, provide support, and extend necessary assistance to the affected families.
Landslides are a recurring problem in Sikkim, especially during heavy rains, often leading to loss of life and property. This latest incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of people living in the hilly regions of the state.
