Electricity demand in the country has increased. In the first 10 days of December, power consumption in the country rose by almost 1.3 per cent to 34.23 billion units (BU) compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Power. Power consumption during the same period last year was 33.78 billion units. The total power consumption in December 2020 was 105.62 billion units. In December 2019 it was 101.08 billion units. Power supply has increased compared to last year. Experts say the boom in economic activity across the country is the main reason for the improvement in electricity demand in December. During the first 10 days of December, the maximum power demand was at 169.12 GW.
Electricity consumption rose 2.6 per cent to 99.37 billion units in November this year. Consumption was 96.88 billion units in November last year and 93.94 billion units in November 2019. Electricity consumption rose 3.3 per cent to 112.79 billion units in October. 109.17 billion units in the same month last year.
Following the second wave of Covid-19 in April this year, several states imposed a lockdown. This led to a decline in demand for commercial and industrial electricity. Power consumption increased after the Covid-19 subsided. In May this year, power consumption rose by 6.6 per cent to 108.80 units. In May, 2020 it was 102.08 billion units. Electricity consumption rose by almost nine per cent to 114.48 billion units in June. In June, 2020 it was 105.08 billion units.
