Betel leaves( Tamalapaku) are widely grown in South and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan to New Guinea. Betel has a special place in the Hindu tradition. It is used in Pooja ceremonies.


Betel leaves have many uses containing many nutrients. It is used in making pans, but pan-eating is discouraged, citing the risk of oral cancer. Studies have shown that the effects of tobacco and other substances increase the risk of cancer of the lips, mouth and tongue. However, independently, betel leaves are not found to have any harmful effects.


Betel nut(vakka) is considered auspicious in spiritual rituals and prayers. Betel nuts have good health benefits. It is rich in Vitamin-C, Thiamine, Riboflavin and Carotene and Calcium.

Betel juice
Betel juice is used to treat sore throat.
The leaves are oiled, heated slightly and placed on the chest to prevent respiratory diseases.
Ghee is applied to betel leaves and bandaged.
Squeezing betel juice in the ear reduces ear-ache.
Betel juice is mixed with milk to prevent unconsciousness.
Combine betel juice, basil juice, ginger juice, pepper powder and honey to reduce colds and coughs in children.
Drink a teaspoonful of betel juice when the heart is beating erratically and irregularly.


Betel Nut
Betel nut has anti-microbial anti-cancer and anti-diabetic properties. They help prevent cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Betel nut is used in traditional medicine to treat wounds, inflammation and asthma. Other benefits include reducing oral cavity disorders, digestive problems, and stress.
Heat betel nuts and apply it on swollen and sore joints reduces pain. 
Applying betel nut on the ears soothes rheumatism and reduces headaches.
