A lot of high brows and eye-rolls. That and a lot more were reserved for Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji who recently got trolled on social media for her views on #MeToo and women in the corner who, according to her, need to 'change.' It all began when she sat down for Rajeev Masand's Actresses Roundtable for 2018 and said, "I think as a woman you have to be that powerful within yourself, you have to believe that you're so powerful that if you ever come into a situation like that you have the courage to say 'back off.' I think you have to have the courage to be able to protect yourself. You have to take responsibility for your own self."
Even Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma, who were a part of the same panel, tried to cut in with some sense but the any narrative other than hers was met with defiance and martial art noises. Needless to say, it drew a lot of flak on Twitter where tweeps pointed out that the problematic tonality. But that's not the end of it. Now, Manikarnika actress Kangana Ranaut has reacted to the entire episode. Known for her bold opinions, Kangana without taking any names said, "People who need support, who need to be empowered, we must empower but agar Rani Laxmi Bai jaise ladkiyan agar humari society humein de sakti hai toh why not, unko discourage nahi karna chahiye. If they are strong women, we should not discourage women. I was 16-years-old when I filed my first FIR against sexual assault so there are people who can stand up for themselves, they shouldn’t be discouraged."
When quizzed further about vulnerable children who often are at the receiving end, the actress added, "Like I said, empowerment who need, they should be empowered, who need. But, not necessarily everyone needs. Some people can give empowerment also. Some people are givers, the ones who can should be encouraged to give strength, people who are working with NGOs." On the work front, the actor who turned director with Manikarnika will be seen portraying the life of Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi. It is set to release on January 25.
