Shillong, April 3 : Hundreds of houses were damaged when heavy rains accompanied with hailstones and strong winds lashed Meghalaya, an official here said on Monday.

Several rooftops were blown away and houses were damaged by the hailstones. Many trees and electric poles were reportedly uprooted, disrupting power transmission.

Internet service was also disrupted in some parts of Shillong city.

"There were reports of several houses getting damaged by the hailstones and the wind but no one was rendered homeless," Chief Secretary K.S. Kropha told IANS.

He said no casualty was reported from any part of the state.

Minor landslips were reported on Shillong-Tamabil road.

"Wherever there are reports of landslips, we are trying to clear the debris to ensure smooth movement of vehicles," a Public Work Department official said.
