2 Jindal varsity law teachers get 2018 Thomas Edison Innovation Fellowship

Sonipat (Haryana), March 7 (IANS) Avirup Bose and Natasha Nayak, Assistant Professors at the Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) of the O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) have received the 2018 Thomas Edison Innovation Fellowship award from the George Mason University School of Law, Virginia.

JGLS is the only law school in Asia whose professors have been awarded the prestigious fellowship.

The faculty members will join a series of invitation-only conferences over the course of a year in which Edison Fellows study and discuss a structured curriculum, engage in roundtable discussions with expert senior scholars and industry representatives, and share, examine and collaborate on new areas of research on the moral and economic value of patented innovation, a JGLS statement said. 

"The year-long non-resident fellowship programme brings together a group of scholars to develop research papers on patent law and policy and culminates in the production of substantial academic research papers that are published in law journals or other peer-reviewed academic journals," the statement added.

Both scholars went through an extensive application process prior to being selected for the fellowship from the George Mason University's Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property (CPIP).

Congratulating the faculty members for their accomplishment, JGU Founding Vice Chancellor and JGLS Dean Professor C Raj Kumar said: "This prestigious award is a reinstatement of JGU's leadership in initiating interdisciplinary and high-impact research in the area of innovation and law. Our university has been at the forefront of promoting research and knowledge creation in law and related fields."

Bose is currently Assistant Professor and Assistant Director, Centre for International Trade and Economics Laws at JGLS. He holds law degrees from the W.B University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) and Harvard Law School had earlier become the first Indian to be recognised as a "Next Generation Antitrust Scholar" in 2016. Bose's area of research concentrates on regulatory issues and innovation. 

Nayak is Assistant Professor and Assistant Director, Centre for International Trade and Economic, JGLS and holds an LLM degree from George Washington University Law School, a BA LLB degree from NUJS and a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics for Competition law from King's College, London. Nayak's research focuses on the emerging interface between IP and competition, especially in the pharmaceuticals and the ICT sectors. Nayak is currently a visiting fellow at Stanford University's The Hoover Institution.

The Edison Fellowship is one of the centerpieces of CPIP's mission to promote a better academic discussion about intellectual property rights with substantial scholarship produced from rigorous research that examines the moral and economic value of patented innovation.
