Congress cracks down on CM debate as cyber infighting escalates in Kerala unit

Thiruvananthapuram, April 25 (IANS) The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has issued a stern warning to its leaders and workers against making public statements on the Chief Ministerial choice after the elections, as internal divisions spill into the open and intensify online.

KPCC President Sunny Joseph on Saturday said remarks in print, visual, and social media that could tarnish the party’s image would not be tolerated.

Such statements, he cautioned, would be treated as indiscipline.

The directive follows growing unease among party workers and supporters of the United Democratic Front (UDF), who have expressed dissatisfaction over the public airing of internal matters.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) had earlier advised leaders to refrain from such discussions, but sections within the party continued to engage in them, prompting the KPCC to reiterate its position.

Despite the warning, factional activity has shown little sign of abating, particularly on digital platforms.

In a related development, Hibi Eden has offered to step down as head of the KPCC Digital Media Cell, citing the conclusion of the Assembly elections.

His decision comes amid a sharp escalation in online clashes over the Chief Minister’s post, with even members of the digital media team reportedly divided along factional lines.

Eden, however, has maintained that his resignation is not linked to the ongoing controversy.

The KPCC has yet to take a final decision on his letter.

Further underscoring the deepening rift, Vimala Binu, Digital Media Cell coordinator, has lodged a complaint with the State Police chief alleging that fake screenshots were being circulated in her name as part of the campaign around the leadership tussle.

She has sought legal action against those responsible.

The controversy gained traction after purported screenshots suggested she had called for cyber attacks against supporters of K.C. Venugopal.

Supporters of Venugopal, V.D. Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala remain locked in a bitter online battle, even as senior leaders avoid direct confrontation.

With potential MLA support becoming crucial, loyalists of all three camps are also engaged in quiet efforts to consolidate backing, highlighting the high stakes in the leadership contest.
