Kolkata – At least two people died as heavy overnight rain flooded Kolkata on Tuesday, leaving streets and homes underwater.
Police said 60-year-old Jitendra Singh was electrocuted at Hossain Shah Road early in the morning. The second victim has not yet been identified.
The city recorded extreme rainfall, with Garia Kamdahari logging 332 mm, Jodhpur Park 285 mm, Kalighat 280 mm, and several other areas crossing 250 mm. Waterlogging led to traffic chaos, with water entering houses, residential complexes, and key city roads.
The India Meteorological Department warned of more rain due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
Metro services between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations were suspended for safety reasons, officials said, as flooding disrupted smooth operations.
