Laser Lights Near Coimbatore Airport Put Night Landings at Risk

Coimbatore, Sep 23 – Authorities at Coimbatore International Airport have warned that laser lights from nearby areas are endangering night flights. Pilots say strong beams can cause glare, temporary blindness, and confusion during landings, when full focus is critical.

The issue is most dangerous at night, as pilots’ eyes are adjusted to darkness. Several incidents have already been reported to police. Many of the beams seem to come from party halls and hotels around the airport. Officials said it may not always be intentional, but even accidental use threatens safety.

Police have been asked to increase patrols in areas like Chinniyampalayam and Neelambur, especially in the evenings. The matter was discussed at the recent Airfield Environment Management Committee meeting, where members urged tougher action.

Suggestions included fines for offenders, public awareness drives, and warnings about the dangers and legal risks of pointing lasers at planes. The Airports Authority of India also recommended signboards in sensitive zones and outreach programs to educate locals.

Airport officials stressed that safe landings depend on clear visibility, and even a brief distraction from laser lights can put passengers and crew at risk.
