Annamalai Defends Coimbatore Land Deal, Says Bought With Loan and Savings for Organic Farming

Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has denied allegations over his purchase of nearly six acres of farmland in Coimbatore. Critics claimed he bought the land, worth several crores in market value, by paying only the minimum guideline rate.

On Friday, Annamalai clarified that the land was bought using a mix of personal savings and a bank loan taken jointly with his wife, Akila. He said the purchase was meant to pursue their interest in organic farming.

He also mentioned that he has applied for a loan under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) to set up a dairy farm on the property. “My next year’s income tax statement will show all these transactions,” Annamalai said, adding that this was his first and only immovable property purchase.

The BJP leader further shared that he is working on launching an investment firm to support social enterprises. Both he and his wife hold management degrees, and he described his current efforts as part of building legitimate business ventures for their family’s future.

Meanwhile, the controversy stirred up debate online. Some social media users questioned his statement, pointing out that the “Kallapatti” sub-registrar office he referred to does not officially exist, suggesting he might have meant an office on the Saravanampatti–Kalapatti Road. Others shared real estate ads, claiming that land in the area sells for at least Rs 2 crore per acre, far higher than the declared value.

Despite the criticism, Annamalai maintained that the deal was transparent and within legal limits, stressing that his financial records will confirm the details.
