Varanasi: Six policemen have been suspended and five others sent to district lines after a BJP worker died during a police lathicharge in Ghazipur district on Thursday. The district police chief has asked the District Magistrate to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The clash broke out on Tuesday afternoon in Nonhara, where locals were protesting against frequent power cuts. The demonstration reportedly turned violent, and police used batons to disperse the crowd. Around 7–8 people were injured in the action, including BJP worker Siyaram Upadhyay, also known as Jokhu Upadhyay, aged 35.
Siyaram later died from his injuries, triggering public anger. His family accused the police of brutality and demanded strict legal action against those responsible. They also sought justice and compensation for the loss.
The incident has created tension in the area, with local leaders and residents calling for accountability. Authorities have promised that the investigation will be fair and that action will be taken against any officer found guilty.
The suspension of police personnel and the call for a magisterial probe are seen as the first steps toward addressing the controversy. However, the death has already intensified political debate and raised questions about the use of force during public protests.
