For months, Sujatha Bhat has alleged that her daughter, Ananya Bhat, went missing in Dharmasthala in 2003 and that powerful figures suppressed the case. However, a closer look at records, testimonies, and investigation findings raises serious doubts about the authenticity of her claims.
Sujatha maintains that her daughter was an MBBS student at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Yet, the college has confirmed that no student by that name was ever enrolled. No school records, admission forms, or official certificates exist to support her version. Even family members and long-time acquaintances say they never knew of Sujatha having a daughter.
The controversy intensified when ex-sanitation worker Bhima claimed to have buried bodies in Dharmasthala, presenting a skull as evidence. But the Special Investigation Team (SIT) determined the remains were male, not female, discrediting the claim.
Sujatha also alleged that she was abducted, tied to a chair, and later left in a hospital coma for three months. Hospitals in the region, however, reported no records matching her description. She further claimed she had worked as a stenographer with the CBI in Kolkata, but the agency confirmed no employment record of her exists. Between 1999 and 2007, Sujatha was widely known to be living in Ripponpet, Shivamogga, with Prabhakar Baliga. Local magazines even profiled the pair as "childless animal lovers"-a portrayal that starkly contradicts her current narrative of raising a medical student daughter.
In recent years, Sujatha has also accused the Dharmadhikari family of Dharmasthala of insulting and silencing her, though her accounts of where and how these events happened have varied. Critics argue that the allegations appear less about justice and more about personal vendetta and public sympathy, with the "missing daughter" narrative serving as an emotional anchor.
