Kharagpur, Aug 6 (SURYAA): The National Digital Library of India's Android mobile app 'NDL India' has been declared the winner of mBillionth South Asia Award 2017 along with BYJU and WorldReader in "Learning and Education" category, according to information received here.

The mBillionth Award South Asia is given as a recognition of excellence in mobile innovations for development. This year it was given in 10 categories.

The IIT Kharagpur-led NDL India is a single window integration over existing digital repositories with content in several Indian and foreign languages.

"It is a movement to reach out to people at every corner of the country with educational contents of not just books, papers or theses but with class lectures, audio books and lectures, tutorials, assignments and solutions, simulations, animations, data sets, etc. through a single window access," an IIT Kharagpur release said.

NDL India has now over 1 crore indexed content in more than 200 languages with 9 lakh registered users.

In 2010 the Digital Empowerment Foundation instituted the award in association with World Summit Awards for recognizing excellence in mobile innovations for development.

The awards seek to not only reward all those who are taking initiatives to bridge the digital divide, empower people and bring about greater socio-economic equality but also create an ecosystem and network of such innovators and developers so that they can learn from each other, collaborate and scale up, the award website said.
