Mercury dips in north India, no heat wave for next five days (Lead)

New Delhi, June 7 : Reeling under the heat waves or high temperature for past six days, north India finally obtained a spell of respite on Wednesday, even as temperature rose marginally at some isolated places.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that there from June 7 to 11, there will be no heat wave across northern regions of the country.

"Temperature rose by 2 to 5 degree Celsius at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, east Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and coastal Andhra Pradesh and by one to two degrees at few places over Assam and Meghalaya and at isolated places over rest
northeastern states, Bihar and Odisha," IMD said in a statement. 

It however added, that "Heat Wave Warnings for next five days (June 7 to June 11) is nill".

According to the weather experts, the incoming moist winds from Arabian sea, instead of the warm winds from central Pakistan have bought the respite, while rains at isolated places are adding softness to the weather conditions.

Over all, drop in both the maximum and minimum temperature across major parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Punjab Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi was recorded.

Rajasthan, which suffered the most due to heat waves till Tuesday, on Wednesday recorded drop in maximum temperature by two to one degrees, as mercuty overall the state hovered around 40 degrees, rather than 45 to 47 degrees (till Monday), the IMD said.

The maximum temperature on Wednesday in Jaipur hovered around 38 degrees against 41.3 degree Celsius on Tuesday.

According to the IMD data in Bihar, Patna recorded 27.4 degree Celsius as the maximum temperature, which was 10 notches below the season's average.

In Uttar Pradesh, Banda district where mercury touched 48 degree Celsius two days back, was now at 39.6 degrees, three notches below the season's average there, while state capital Lucknow recorded 34.5 degrees, five notches below the seaons's average.

Hissar in Haryana also saw respite, as maximum temperature dropped to 35 degrees(the seasons's average) and Chandigarh recorded 32.5 degrees, which was six notches below the seasons's average.

In Punjab, mercury dipped eight notches below the seasons's average with maximum temperature recorded at 32.1 degrees and minimum temperature recorded at 22.4 degrees.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the maximum temperature also fell by six to two notches below the season's average. 

Temperatures across Himachal Pradesh fell sharply on Wednesday due to widespread overnight rains, with Shimla recording a low of 11.3 degrees Celsius against Tuesday's minimum of 20.9 degrees Celsius.

"The entire state saw light to moderate rains with minimum temperatures falling sharply by six to nine degrees," Manmohan Singh, director of the local Meteorological Office, told IANS.

Meanwhile, the national capital saw sharp respite from excessive heat on Wednesday as the mercury dropped by seven degree Celsius within last 24 hours while some parts also saw light rain.

The maximum temperature in Delhi on Wednesday was recorded at 36.2 degrees, three notches below the season's average. 

According to IMD, there are fair chances of light rain and thundershower across north India, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and dust storm or thunderstorm with squall or hail are likely in parts of Rajasthan.
