NCRB report : Increasing suicide rate in children

The corona epidemic has had a severe impact on children in India. In the year 2020, children committed suicide due to severe depression and stress. In India on average 31 children die every day. A report by the National Crime Records Bureau reveals that 31 children commit suicide every day for some reason. In 2020, 11,396 children under the age of 18 committed suicide.

The number of suicides was 18 percent higher in 2020 than in 2019. Psychiatrists believe that the Covid‌-19 epidemic has had a severe impact on their mental health. According to the NCRB report, the number of child suicides was 21 per cent higher than two years ago. If 9,413 children committed suicide in 2018, 9,613 people committed suicide in 2019.

In 2020, 1,783 additional children committed suicide compared to 2019. Of the total children who committed suicide, 5,392 were boys and 6,004 were girls, as per reports. Of the children who committed suicide, 4,006 were forced to die, mostly with family problems. 1,337 people were plagued with problems related to love. Experts estimate that 1,327 people have committed suicide due to health problems, including drug abuse, autism, unemployment and poverty.

Psychiatrists say that many children have become depressed and have committed suicide due to various factors such as the closure of schools and being confined to their homes.
