'Sare Jahan se Accha'formally known as 'tarana-e-hindi' Anthem of the People of India.is an Urdu language patriotic song written for children by poet Muhammad Iqbal in the ghazal style of Urdu poetry.
The poem was published in the weekly journal Ittehad on 16 August 1904.Publicly recited by Iqbal the following year at Government College, Lahore, British India (now in Pakistan) it quickly became an anthem of opposition to the British Raj.
The song, an ode to Hindustan—the land comprising present-day Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, was later published in 1924 in the Urdu book Bang-i-Dara.
The song has remained popular, especially in India. An abridged version is sung and played frequently as a patriotic song and as a marching song of the Indian Armed Forces. A satirical version of the same from a 1958 Hindi movie also remains popular.
Its popular fast tempo tune was composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar in 1945 based on raga Mishra Pilu, and it was set as a marching tune by Professor Antsher Lobo.
sare jahan se achchha hindostan hamara
hum bulbulen hain is ki ye gulsitan hamara
ghurbat mein hon agar hum rahta hai dil watan mein
samjho wahin hamein bhi dil ho jahan hamara
parbat wo sab se uncha ham-saya aasman ka
wo santari hamara wo pasban hamara
godi mein khelti hain is ki hazaron nadiyan
gulshan hai jin ke dam se rashk-e-jinan hamara
ai aab-rud-e-ganga wo din hai yaad tujh ko
utra tere kinare jab karwan hamara
mazhab nahin sikhata aapas mein bair rakhna
hindi hain hum watan hai hindostan hamara
yunan o misr o ruma sab miT gae jahan se
ab tak magar hai baqi nam-o-nishan hamara
kuchh baat hai ki hasti miTti nahin hamari
sadiyon raha hai dushman daur-e-zaman hamara
'iqbaal' koi mahram apna nahin jahan mein
malum kya kisi ko dard-e-nihan hamara
