Kolkata Mayor files police complaint, seeks security

Kolkata: City Mayor and West Bengal Minister Sovan Chatterjee, engaged in a bitter legal battle with his wife, on Monday said he was feeling "insecure" and filed a complaint with the police to seek security.

Chatteree, whose marital discord has isolated him in the Trinamool Congress, with party supremo Mamata Banerjee said to be "very unhappy" with him, filed the complaint at the Rabindra Sarobar police station.

There has been intense speculation that he may lose the Mayor's post as the Trinamool leadership felt his much-publicised marital feud was denting the party's public image. His security has been downgraded from Z Plus to Z category.

However, Chatterjee has ruled out relinquishing the post, and scotched speculation that he wanted to leave Trinamool and join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

"Whatever speculation is going on, I am not responsible. I am very much in Trinamool. And there is no question of stepping down as Mayor. Yes, I am going through tough times in my personal life, because of the bitter relations with my wife. I have given her right to reside in my ancestral house, and myself shifted to a flat in south Kolkata. But my wife wants to take possession of this house also. And I have learnt about this from sources," he said.

The Mayor, who is facing divorce proceedings from his wife, had earlier filed another case against her and three others. But all four have got anticipatory bail.
